Growing Azaleas

For years Azaleas have had the reputation of being a hard grow plant, and many years ago they probably were. With the abundance of information available to us today allowing us to have access to the latest growing techniques for any plant we want to grow, we tend to forget that our great- grandsparents, and even our grandsparents often had to learn their growing techniques by trial and error, and a lot of plants that had particular soil, light, or food requirements were more often than not, put into the difficult or hard to grow category. That reputation has unfortunately stuck with them over the years.

Azaleas are not hard to grow. As with a lot of other plants there are a few rules that must be followed to create the right growing conditions, but once established azaleas are very easy to look after.

Azaleas come in a wide range of colors, white, pink, red, purple, orange and yellows, as well as many multi-colors. There's single and double flower varieties, there are varieties with tiny insignificant flowers but popular because of their deeply colored leaves. All of them are beautiful plants worthy of a place in any garden, but the single flower varieties are the hardiest and more suited to sunny positions, but they do have a more limited color range than the doubles.

The first thing to do is decide where in your garden you want to grow your azalea plants. If you are planting into the ground, try to find areas on the South and East side of your home, where they will be more protected from very hot sun. When selecting the areas keep in mind that the single flower azaleas are more sun tolerant, but still need to be protected from the very hot sun, and doubles will always need to have moderate shade.

Azaleas will not tolerate alkaline soil and prefer a rich acid soil with a PH level from 5-6. PH test your soil, if you live in an area where the soil is naturally high alkaline, then you may need to consider growing your plants in tubs or pots. PH testers can be purchased from nurseries and hardware stores, they're inexpensive but a valuable tool to have.

Once you've decided where you're going to plant your azaleas, and you know the PH of the soil, the next important step is to dig the area over really well, you need to add plenty of peat moss, leaf mould or other organic matter like well rotted cow manure to increase the soil acidity as well as to increase the moisture holding capacity of the soil.

The roots of azaleas need to be kept cool and moist, but not wet, which means you'll need to ensure that the soil drain in the area you've chosen, is very good. In heavy soil it's a good idea to dig in plenty of Gypsum or a good clay breaker, although a safer alternative is to build raised beds and …

Be Happy First, Change Your Life Second

Focus on being happy and the rest will follow.

Here's an example: Imagine its 5pm. The kids are tired and hungry. They're whining for food, for TV, for juice, for hugs. You're tired and stressed out. You're juggling the hot saucepan while trying to reason with your eldest who's throwing a tantrum because you mixed her peas in with her carrots. You're starting to panic because you've got company tonight and the house looks like a bomb hit it. Then your youngest throws his plate on the floor and splatters food everywhere. Pause …. What's your next response?

Throw a tantrum too?

Take a deep breath, laugh, or just relax?

Either choice ….. what's the difference of each response?

1. By throwing a tantrum or getting exasperated you choose to escalate the tension. You get angry, you huff and puff while clearing up the mess, you raise your voice and feel uptight. Your children feel bad, mommy's angry and it's their fault, they get whinier still vying for your attention. Your spiral of anger and frustration increases.

2. By laughing, or relaxing you choose to defuse it. You release the tension in your body, your children get to laugh with you "oops, look what just happened, lets be more careful next time, ok?" The tension evaporates; you remember how wonderful your children are. The whining is changed for playfulness.

In both cases, you still have to clear up the mess and prepare the house for guests – but it is not hard to see which response will be more fun, and bring more happiness to you and your children. You are not the victim here, you are in control – you choose your response, no one else does it for you.

Happiness is a Habit!

No one says being in control of your response is easy! The key is to keep practicing your response. Simply practicing and choosing to be happy will have an immediate impact on your outlook. Try this exercise …

… think about an event that brings you great joy – a fabulous achievement, a wonderful holiday, the birth of your child, your marriage day …. anything that you can remember clearly as being a happy time. Bring up the memory again in your mind, close your eyes and fill your mind with the memory.
Breath deeply into the memory, visualize it as clearly as you can with all your senses – what can you see, feel, hear, touch, smell. Can you feel the same feelings of joy and happiness? Because you can re-create it in your imagination, it means it is always available to you. Feelings of happiness come from WITHIN, not from without!

For the following few days, consciously remind yourself of this happy memory as often as you can (write post-its, pop-up email reminders, anything to keep you constantly changing your thoughts habits). Do not just think of a person (eg. Child, loved one) but think of an occasion with the person that was …

10 Signs You Need New Kitchen Cookware

If you’re currently putting up with kitchen cookware and saucepans that have seen better days then perhaps you’re coming round to the idea that you should replace them.

Here’s why you should.

1. Perhaps some of your cookware is a bit dangerous, such as if you have a saucepan with a loose handle, then you might struggle to drain pans of boiling water, or to carry food from the kitchen to the table.

2. You might find that your cookware is no longer suitable for your needs. You might want new baking trays, or a stockpot for making soups and for pasta and rice dishes.

3. Modern technology means that newer pans and cookware is more efficient at cooking than ever before. This means that your food will be cooked sooner, and so cooking will take less time.

4. Another benefit of efficient cookware is that it uses less energy. This is much better for the environment and will also save you money on your energy bill.

5. You might want to have new coloured cookware to match your kitchen décor, or to go with your pans, or your kettle. Why should all your cookware be boring?

6. Your old baking trays might have warped a bit, your frying pan might have lost its non stick coating and you might have lost a lid. Struggling with broken or poor products will make cooking harder.

7. Maybe you’re enjoying cooking more than you used to, and are cooking more often, and perhaps entertaining friends and family. You might want to have more pans so that you can cook bigger and better meals and show off your talents

8. Perhaps you want to get your children involved in the cooking, so that they can help, and know why it’s important to eat meals made with fresh and nutritious ingredients. By using good quality cookware, you’ll be able to keep more of the vital nutrients and vitamins in your meals.

9. You might be fed up of cooking ready meals or living off takeaways because your pans and other cookware isn’t suitable. Perhaps you inherited it when you moved house, or perhaps you use a shared kitchen in a student home.

10. It could be that your family has expanded, and that you need bigger pans and cookware, so that everyone can sit down for meals at the same time.

Now you know more about why you might need it, perhaps now is the time to replace your kitchen cookware.…

New Book Teaches Clutter-Removal From Your Home, Office, and Life

Are you tired of seeing that messy room but you never get around to cleaning it? Do you feel overwhelmed just by the thought of organizing your closet or kitchen, and you don’t even know where to start? Then you’ve found the right book. Calming Your Chaos is written by someone who has not only been there, but she’s been there so many times that she’s developed multiple simple and practical strategies for getting organized, clearing out your clutter, and taking back control of your space and life.

Elisa Hawkinson learned her organizational skills after moving more than twenty times. Besides having to train a husband and two sons to stay organized, she has had to pack and move continually for her husband’s job. She also knows about downsizing when the children grow up and leave home. She knows about downsizing further when your spouse passes away. She knows about staying organized in someone else’s space when you remarry, and she understands the dynamics in families that result in one spouse’s clutter becoming frustrating to the other, who may perhaps see her husband’s mess of tools, but not her own overflowing closet.

Elisa has been so successful at helping people get organized that she has become a professional organizer with her own business. She has been hired by wives to help them clean their homes, only to impress the husbands so much that they’ve allowed her to tackle their garages. In one case, Elisa even saved a marriage after a wife filed divorce papers, threatening to leave if her husband didn’t get rid of his junk. Fortunately, Elisa not only was able to help him clean out his garage, but she also helped to talk him through why he was hanging onto his stuff so he could learn to let it go.

But where do you begin to clean up your clutter? Each chapter of Calming Your Chaos offers practical tips and suggestions for every space you may want to tackle. Elisa provides a monthly calendar with lists of things to clean or organize each month, depending on what is most practical, such as taking out or putting away things you will need for specific seasons or holidays. Nor is the book all about cleaning. It’s also about being practical and organized in all areas of your life, including what you buy, which ultimately could add to your clutter. I especially loved Elisa’s advice to “Pray before you shop.”

The chapters are very specific, focusing on different rooms in the house. In many cases, Elisa provides photos to provide visual references for how things can look when you use file folders, special shelving units, or other organizational tools. Everything from the kitchen and bathroom to the garage and basement are covered in these chapters.

Personally, I think the chapter on moving is the most helpful. Elisa shares her numbering system for boxes so you know what you’ve packed in each box and you can categorize it so what you most …

Landlord – Evicted Tenant Breaks Back Into Your Property

I am a landlord. I have the gray hair to prove it. If that is not enough to prove it, I have some of the most amazing, head-shaking, wtf stories to back it up. Here are some of the more imaginative experiences that I have had as a landlord.

Tenant worked as a janitor at a church while he was waiting for his singing career as a christian musician to take off. He claimed he had tithed all of his rent money that month because he felt the church would do better good with the money. He never could explain why he tithed more than then 10% of my income to the church and didn’t donate the balance of the 90% of his income to cover his rent. So I evicted him. On eviction day, the sheriff had the eviction company through everything in the corner of the parking lot instead of on the street. My maintenance man was there to change the locks on the front door. After Work I was to meet my business partner at the property so we would drag all the items from parking lot to street. This included multiple bed frames, complete mattress sets, all of his and his 2 children’s clothing, washer & dryer, and everything else.

When I arrived at property two hours after the eviction I realized that everything was gone from the parking lot. I figured the tenant had come by with a truck to collect all of his belongings. I went inside the property to check the condition of the interior. Much to my surprise I discover the tenant had broken in the back door and had moved all of his belongings back inside the property. I call the police. He calls his church.

Next thing we have is multiple police cars and the minister and about 25 people from the church. The church people decide to join hands and ring the property and start singing christian songs. Of course my evicted tenant is standing in the middle singing the loudest solo I have ever heard. When not singing they are praying for the redemption of my soul since I refuse to evict his belongings from the property  a second time in a three hour time period.

I am telling the police to have the tenant arrested from criminal trespassing. His possessions are now my possessions and I have no intention of giving any of it back. The police handcuff the tenant and place him in the back of the squad car. The minister steps up and decides to broker a deal. With the police watching the proceedings, my business partner and I start to lug some of the possessions out of the property and place them in the parking lot. The members of the church then start bidding on buying the items. Once we got close to the amount I was owed on back rent, I decided to sell everything else for $1. The church members just happened …

Residential Property Development

Thanks to residential property development, there has been a significant improvement in the old, run down neighborhoods in the UK. Professional property development organizations, such as the Neptune Group, improve buildings and properties so that they can attract tenants. For instance, they can rebuild and remodel old commercial office buildings and turn them into residential units.

Residential property development did not become popular until around ten years ago, and now public interest is increasing every year. Because they are able to develop new residential homes, companies like the Neptune Group are helping improve conditions in UK communities all the time. Because property development companies work with the owners of old buildings and properties at low costs, they have the time and money to improve the conditions in order to make the properties more "livable" and affordable for others to live in.

Not every use of a property can be changed though, which is why it's important for residential property developers to be consulted first. They will analyze a building to see if it can be successfully changed and improved, and if it can, they will then come up with a detailed plan on how to change it. Some properties may only need minor improvements, while others will need to be wholly converted.

If someone is wanting to turn an old house into a flat, for instance (or vice versa), it would be wise for them to consult a residential property development company in order to know just exactly what it would cost and how much time it would take for a successful change. They will also be informed by the property developers if the investment will be worth it. Sometimes the costs and resources of turning a building into a flat will be much more expensive than any revenues ever earned through renting the units out.

Residential property development companies are the best bet for anyone wishing to renovate his or her property so that it can be as good as new. Residential property developers can convert both homes and old, commercial buildings into improved apartment units, thus helping with important factors like urban development. …
