What Is an Outdoor Living Area? One Definition

What is an outdoor living area? The easy answer is simple and very broad: it can be whatever the owner wants it to be, providing of course that it is outside and that a good deal of time is spent living in it. What are your wants and needs? How do you like to spend your time out-of-doors? These are the questions that will help develop your definition of an outdoor living area. For these reasons, my definition of an outdoor living area includes the following features:

  • a furnished patio, dining area and kitchen.
  • an activity area including a swimming pool and lounge area.
  • a well designed landscape and garden area to add ambiance.

First and foremost, the key elements of an outdoor living area, like the inside of the home, include a kitchen, a dining area and a patio sitting area. When weather permits our family likes to cook, eat, relax and entertain outside; my wife and I like to have our friends over; our three teenage children like to have their friends over. Cooking, then, is important and takes place at all hours from morning until midnight. A good barbecue forms the center piece of any outdoor kitchen but an extra burner or two in some form also make life easier for the cook. An ample work surface with a chopping block or cutting board can further increase the cook’s pleasure time outside. Access to water, whether it be full outdoor plumbing or simply a hose hook-up or water dispenser, is yet another necessity. One more important feature is a means of keeping food and beverages cool and handy, either in a fridge or cooler on ice. An added bonus for me is a sit up counter area where friends can watch and keep me company while I cook. All of these features should be arranged to form an efficient working triangle just as they are indoors. Next, the kitchen should have easy access to the dining area. A dining table with seating to accommodate groups larger than just immediate family is a wise move if space permits. Once again, a bonus here would be outdoor storage space to hold patio dishes, flatware and linen. A chest or garden hutch could easily be adapted to fit this purpose. Finally an area to sit, relax, read, converse and even watch TV if possible is a lovely addition to any outdoor living area. Comfortable chairs, couches, side tables, a glider or porch swing and even a daybed can make this area cozy and inviting. Patio furniture can be purchased in a wide range of styles and materials to meet anyone’s taste and preference; my bias leans to cedar patio furniture. The goal here, ultimately, is to make the outdoor living area mirror the comfort and design of the indoors.

In addition to eating, relaxing and entertaining outside, we also like to be active; thus my outdoor living area also includes a swimming pool and space for other activities. Pools come in …

Making an Old Shed New – Ideas For Updating Your Shed

Tired of looking out your back window at an ugly, weathered backyard shed? What to do without having to go to the trouble and expense of building a shed? Is your better half nudging you to “do something about that ugly shed?” One can’t deny, even the ugliest of sheds is better than no shed.

First, make sure the shed is solid and worthy of continued maintenance – if it needs rebuilding, you can get shed plans that will guide your reconstruction. However, if it’s sturdy, shows no signs of rot or rust – its worthy of a beauty makeover.

Doors are a great way to freshen and update your garden shed – explore options at your local home center. Bring some humor to your shed with an old-fashioned outhouse door. Or, explore wood doors that allow for a bright colored paint, split doors offer a casual look, and double barn doors will provide for charming convenience.

New hardware provides an easy way to give the shed a more current look. Knobs, hinges, latches, and lights will support an affordable facelift.

Consider replacing the weathered, fly filled windows with paneled windows – if the sizes are standard, it’s an affordable upgrade that will add charm and a clean appearance to your backyard shed.

Windows? Now the fun begins. Affordable shutters painted to match your doors and other trim will turn an eye-soar into an adorable shed that will draw the envy of neighbors. If shutters are too cute for your style, consider a variety of flower boxes.

If these added updates aren’t enough, consider adding some pre-fabbed gingerbread accents to soften your shed’s edges, corners and eves. These are easy to install, simple to paint to match and will add an entire new look to your once staid looking shed.

New shed siding can be added, or even a new roof without redoing the entire construction. There are countless options when considering new siding; feel free to explore several unique shed siding ideas here.

If you truly have time on your hands, you may want to ponder updating your shed with a new front porch; add an awning or railing – all or part of this will offer a soft and welcoming appearance. Some have taken it a step further by adding a stone, brick or gravel path, complimenting the inviting look.

Never underestimate the power of paint. Consider a bright and contrasting color of the door and trim.

Tired of looking at that empty shed side? Try sprucing it up with an artistically arranged display of something curious. For example antique yard tools, hanging baskets, birdhouses, tiles, sundials or other interesting items.

Add a trellis to soften the shed’s presence. We’ve seen simple trellis made from apple tree pruning’s that were woven together and kept in place with wire – 2-3-4 in a row along the sheds side will be something a garden club would fuss over, attractive and easy.

Now, for the obvious suggestion – updating your shed …

Types of Garden Gnomes and Their Advantages

Garden gnomes have been around for over 2 centuries now. They began to appear as garden decorations in European countries in the early 1800’s. They were first introduced in Germany. People would decorate their gardens with these gnomes and they were thought to tend to the garden during the night. Since then these dwarf like statues have gained much popularity. They come in various designs and styles and are perfect for decorating your garden.

These statues are made of different materials and come in a number a number of colors adding life and a little amusement to your garden. Earlier these gnomes were made of materials like terra cotta and clay but recently have started being made of plastic. People believe that these statues take care of their garden and the earth. This is why they have gained so much popularity. These are also far cheaper than other garden statues and decorations. The fact that they are made of plastic makes them very durable. Earlier clay and terra cotta gnomes took much longer to manufacture as the paint and clay required a long time to mold. Plastic statues are far cheaper and much more durable than clay counterparts. They are mass produced in factories and most manufacturers are now shifting to plastic instead of clay and terra cotta.

They main advantage of plastic over clay is that these statues can be molded into to any shape with ease. You would find designs of simple gnomes where as some manufacturers have gone as far as making rappers out of these cute dwarfs. You could buy them in cute gardening positions or just buy the traditional dwarf which is starring back at you. Manufacturers have even started making all sorts of sporting gnomes. You could buy dwarfs with the theme of your favorite football team. You could even buy gnomes wear your favorite baseball players jersey. This has made a number of sports enthusiasts buy these for their gardens. You would even find these gnomes in bars where people would go to watch a football game.

Though there are a number of collectors that buy these products in clay, I personally suggest you buy a plastic one. A clay statue would probably cost anywhere between twenty to a hundred dollars. Most plastic gnomes usually cost anywhere between five to twenty dollars. You would find a number of websites that sell these products online. You would find plenty of designs to choose from. So make sure you go online today and buy one of these for your home.…

Disguising Your Oil Tank in the Garden

Domestic heating oil tanks are essential for many properties, especially rural homes, as they are used to store the oil needed to heat their homes. Regardless of their necessity, heating oil tanks aren’t the most attractive of objects to have in your garden.

As well as making your tank more aesthetically pleasing, disguising your tank can also help to prevent oil thefts.

Here are a couple of tips on how to disguise your oil tank:

  • Build a shed around your heating oil tank. The shed will need to have large doors so that the entire tank can fit through, in case the tank needs replacing, and preferably not be of a wood construction in the event of a fire. The tank also needs to be well lit and easily accessible for filling, including sufficient roof height. Making the shed bigger than required for the tank will also ensure there is enough ventilation around the tank.
  • Put a trellis fence around your oil tank. Trellis is a great way to disguise a tank and can be incorporated with your garden theme and colours. Make sure you have a gate or entrance on one side so that the tank is easily accessible for filling and maintenance. You could even cover the trellis with hanging vines to create even more of a disguise.
  • Build a wall around your domestic oil tank. Using concrete blocks or cement you could build a wall around your oil tank, but be sure to leave plenty of space for ventilation around the tank. Be sure not to block the tank in as it’ll need to be accessible for the driver to inspect before his delivery and for filling and maintenance. Once the wall is in place, you can decorate the area with plants; however these you will need to move these out of the way before your delivery is made to ensure that there are no hazards to your delivery driver. Potted plants would need to be moved before the delivery. If any plants are put in permanently, they need to not be of a height that would impede the delivery, and not have thorns that would cause injury to the driver during the delivery.
  • Surround the tank with tall plants. You’ll need to leave adequate space around the tank, but plants and bushes such as holly and boxwood provide good coverage when they are fully grown. Grasses such as pampas grass are also quite popular as they don’t take long to grow. Pots in plants would need to be moved before the delivery.
  • Get creative. If you’re feeling particularly creative you could choose to paint your oil tank – although done poorly you could attract even more attention to it! We’ve seen everything from Dougal (the Magic Roundabout Character) to giant watermelons and marrows, to Thomas the Tank Engine!

Whatever disguise you opt for, accessibility and safety is key. Let us know your favourite option below.…

The Many Benefits of Garden Fencing

A garden fence is a great way to combine the practical with the stylish, by both adding security to your garden and creating a beautiful and stylish touch to your yard. Enclosing your yard or garden can help keep pests and deer from eating the fruits and vegetables you have spent so much time on, and the fence can also be a reflection of your individual personality.

Gardening is a hobby that more and more people are starting to pursue, partly because it is rewarding and can reduce stress and partly because of the green movement. Protecting your garden with a fence can be a big deal especially if you live in an area with a lot of pests and animals that eat plants. Deciding which materials to make your fence from has a lot to do with individual preference as well as the look and style of your home.

Old country homes that could be described as rustic usually benefit most stylistically from a garden fence made from wood. There are many different types of wood available for the purpose, but one of the best and most cost effective is bamboo. Bamboo fences are usually solid and add a sense of security and privacy to your garden as well. Other wood fence styles are not solid and do not do an adequate job of providing privacy or of keeping animals out.

Modern homeowners often use vinyl to create their garden fences. Vinyl comes in numerous styles, some of which are made to resemble real wood. The main benefit of a vinyl fence is that it is very easy to keep clean and maintain. These fences can easily be made to match the style of various modern home styles.

Metal is another option when it comes to garden fences, although this option is less popular than it used to be. Metal fencing can be expensive and can rust. It does have the advantage of lasting for many years if properly taken care of, and it can keep animals out of your garden fairly effectively.

There are a couple things you can do to save even more money on your garden fence. It has become popular to “patinize” metal fencing, giving it an aged and rusty look. Visit your local salvage yard to find metal fencing panels that are already rusted. Used brick is another good option, as there is no reason for structural support with a garden fence. This can also provide a stylish aged look. Finally, if you live near a creek, dry stone is a great option for a garden fence and it’s completely free. Dry stone is also easy to maintain and will last for years.

A garden fence is a great way to add security to your yard and garden, as well as creating a bit more style in your yard. They can also be used to portion off a section of your yard where you will not be bothered by neighbors and you can relax …

Garden Gnomes – The History Of Mythical Garden Ornaments

Our charming decorative outdoor gnomes have found a place in the heart of most Western cultures. We can find the first stories of gnomes showing up in European folklore. These mystical creatures were understood to be creatures of goodwill. Under the cover of darkness they would reward the efforts and enterprise of farmers, merchant traders and wives through lending assistance in the garden fields, stores and in home gardens.

Ceramic gnomes were first crafted in the countryside of Germany. Their creator was Phillip Griebel and gnomes first came into being in the mid-nineteenth century. The gnomes were purchased for superstitious and metaphysical reasons as they were believed to fend off thieves from grain and vegetable supplies.

Gnomes were brought into England by Sir Charles Isham and this happened in 1847. Isham was wanting to spice up his garden with a burst of color and he found that the gnome was the ideal way to go about it. One of Isham’s surviving gnomes is valued at over two million pounds sterling.

Griebel was originally only making statuary in the form of deer and fairies. When he began manufacturing the gnomes, demand skyrocketed. Demand exceeded supply and the gnomes were a hit amongst the German customer base.

Manufacturing the humble gnomes continued until the start of World War I. The ability to maintain production was affected by the German war efforts but production resumed in the mid 1940s. Communist police had suspicions that the garden gnomes were being used as conduits for smugglers but the gnomes went on to become the leading export of Eastern Germany.

The fall of Communism lead to the market becoming flooded by cheap imported Czech and Polish imitation garden gnomes. The legacy of Griebel’s original garden gnome design continues on today with the family’s original manufacturing plant still standing in Central Germany.

Garden gnomes today can be found frozen in many positions such as riding a motorcycle, wearing roller skates or even holding solar lights. They have been completely revamped to suit the variety of peoples’ modern day interests and hobbies.

Garden gnomes remain to be one of the most popular garden ornaments on the market today. Garden gnomes are now being manufactured from a number of different materials – resin, concrete, cement, and ceramic. These endearing little garden gnomes are traditionally made to be less than 14″ tall although they do come in a variety of different heights.

Gnomes have been used as decorative garden ornaments since 1847 and their popularity continues today.…

How To Write Gardening Articles: Tips For Gardeners And Writers

Believe or not, my first published article – and one of the first things I ever had published – was about gardening. There’s a good demand for garden-related bits…. grow your own is back in fashion…. and it’s not too technical, so it’s a good place to get started. Here are a few tips to help you.

This is the most important thing you need to know: You don’t necessarily need to be that green-fingered to write about gardening. What a lot of gardeners are looking for is ideas and inspiration. And little tips, tricks and secrets that can help them improve their garden without spending a lot of money.

If you’ve done, or are planning, a garden project – like a pond, decking or landscaping for example – you could use that as your starting point. Write up a step-by-step guide to what you did. Include a ‘shopping list’ of items that are required for the project, with estimated costs. Things like this make a project seem more achievable and boost your credibility.

Or, if you know say tomatoes or petunias inside out put some of your own secret tips together. Things that readers are unlikely discover from a regular gardening book. For example, do you have a particular fertiliser that you’ve found works really well? Or do you know a little-known, organic way to get rid of green fly?

Whatever you do, try and make your writing tightly focussed to the subject and aim to put a personal twist on it. This will add real power to your writing:

So who buys garden writing? As well as gardening magazines try general interest magazines and newspapers too. Some women’s magazines buy garden writing, as do magazines aimed at the over-60s. Try gardening websites.

Consider setting up your own gardening blog as a way to promote your services.

Photos are a great way of adding interest to your garden writing and can even earn you extra money. Try to focus your photos closely on what you are writing about rather than just having general garden scenes. If you’re writing about a project as I suggested above create a photo ‘how to’ guide with a pic of each main step.

One last thing, remember that gardening is seasonal in most countries so plan ahead. It’s too late to be thinking about writing on summer gardening themes in the middle of the summer. Think about writing on autumn and winter gardening topics instead, and vice versa.…

John Milton was born on 9th December, 1608 in London. Milton very nicely blends the Renaissance and Reformation movement in his great literary works.
